My buddys did the same thing and a couple mounths later the injection pump went so we got hom a rebuild for 950 , it would be in your best intrest to put a fuel gauge or warning lite to aleart you to fuel pressure lose on the newer 5.9 cummins with the 24 valve engine and as far as DIY unless ya got the 125000 grad layen around for the test stand and other stuff and a couple years on that stand plus the schoolen ain't no way you are going to do it under the shade tree.
