Back quite a few years an Uncle of mine owned a gas station. He had an adaptor that accepted a can of Gumout, actually the device was sold by Gumout, this replaced the gas line at the carb inlet. The Gumout can was placed on the adaptor that was then screwed into the carb gas inlet. You started the engine and gave it just enough throttle to keep it running. It completely cleaned the carb and removed varnish and gum as well as carbon from the entire combustion chamber. The Gumout adaptor is no longer sold, but you can put together a makeshift one quite easily from a short piece of gas line w/fitting, a short rubber hose, and a small funnel. Attach it to your tractor carb, pour in the cleaner(your favorite brand), start engine and run until the funnel is empty, turn off ignition, then reconnect the normal gas line. Allow the engine to sit overnight, and the next morning run the engine(use tractor) until throughly warmed up and runs smooth. I use this method every time one of the gas tractors begins to run rough. As the others have said, do this outdoors to avoid the fumes.
