if you hit that button, it lets them know that you are there Thats why your spam will increase. Generally they write a program to send SPAM to every possible email adress, some of them dont exist. If you click remove from the list, they will know that your email adress actually exists, and will get paid by other companies to give them a bunch of emails that really exist.
