Ida now has the potential to build winds of up to 120 mph at landfall. Category 3 hurricane winds are considered devastating, according to the Saffir Simpson Wind Scale. Category 3 winds range from 111- 129 mph.Gulf meteorologist Rocco Cilaci said the latest update is bringing the hurricane slightly eastward, bringing the Mississippi coastline more into play. The latest update also increases the strength of Ida from a low Category 3 to a strong Category 3 at landfall.
Landfall is expected in Louisiana, but storm-force winds will extend as far as 80 miles from the center and will directly impact the Mississippi Coast.
Ida is expected to be a dangerous major hurricane when it reaches the northern Gulf Coast on Sunday, and the risk of hurricane-force winds continues to increase, the NHC said.
