Was there a state inspection on the vehicle? Is this your son's first 4 wheel drive? I do not mean to be critical, but things are obviously not going well with this acquisition.
Changing out tie rods, wheel bearings, and more front end parts may have been necessary, but the so-called death wobble might have only needed a replacement steering stabilizer. It's a geometry problem.
Also, losing or burning four quarts of oil in 500 miles is not normal for any recent-model engine. There should be smoke or drips to indicate the source of the problem.
