I would leave both primary and secondary filters in place.
If you are worried about over pressuring install a adjustable fuel relief bypass valve at the secondary filter and a fuel pressure gauge in the cab.(Gauge T-ed in post filters)
I have a gauge in all my vehicles, they work great for monitoring fuel system health at all times at a glance
