I'm assuming you have only the block and not the head? Because the valve cover and head healp a lot in ID'ing these.
The CONXX is simply the conveyor number the mold was carried by. It tells you nothing useful.
Do you know if it will bolt to a 'normal' GM trans, 60's-90's? That limits the selection.
40's engines use a single side lifter cover on the right side that goes all the way to the head. 50's/early 60's use a single cover that stops well below the head. The 'late' L6's (1963-90's) use 2 side lifter covers that are rectangular and stop well below the head. Eahc covers the lifters for 3 cylinders. Assuming you have a 'late' block, the 194/230/250's have the fuel pump in front of behind the motor mount, the 292's hav it behind the motor mount (usually a triangular rib pattern on the block with 3 holes at the corner). Side covers for a 292 are ~6" tall while the others are in the 4" range.
194's have smaller bores, 230 and 250's are the same bores (3 7/8"). 194 and 230 share strokes, 250 is more. 292's have 250 bore but much more stroke. Rotating parts don't swap between 292 and others.
