No experience with the V8"s, but have an 01 Cherokee with the 4.0, auto transmission, and the 4wd that"s hi - full time, hi- part time, and lo. Lets you shift in and out of high at will. This girl has 256,000 on her without any real issues. I do take care of her, but bought at 31,000 used, so not sure what those miles involved. I did replace the head about 30k ago but that was due to the freeze plug going out in the back of the head. No good way to get at it without pulling the head. Figured while it was out I would replace (got a real good deal otherwise would have reworked it...) 4wd system works great for me, transmission is still tight. Still averaging 20mpg. Check engine light has been on for 100k due to a slight miss that I can"t detect, but it seems to detect it. For me, the size of the vehicle, the gas mileage, and the room behind the back seat, along with some very good 4wd capabilities - haven"t found anything else to match it. So, for what its worth, I would grab another if I could. Good Luck
