Removing belt pulley

we've got a 560D we want to take the belt pulley off of.we checked it out the other day and it looks like it pretty much just unbolts..except we saw some threads sticking up about 1/2 in. or so. how are we supposed to get to the bolt heads that appear as though they are under the pulley motor? also was told by a friend that there in a gear in there that runs the motor-is that fairly easy to get out?-I hope someone can understand this!!!
