For several reasons. The most common is that they are having starting problems. Now I know that if they would just fix it right to include the correct sized cables it will work. But lots of guys convert for that reason alone.
I'm converting the last 2 things here on the farm to 12 volt for several reasons. #1 being compatibility! #2 is that I want to convert both tractors to electronic ignition. The 6 volt IE is very touchy about voltage drop, 12 is much more forgiving. #3 is better lighting which means bigger bulbs that draw more amperage. All of my equipment is working equipment, nothing at all for show. If I have to do field work at night I like to see. With a 37 amp alt on the M I can mount a couple of rear lights and a couple of extra fronts without over taxing the old 6 volt genny. #4 winter starting when it's in the sub zero range. Even when it -zero I still have a drive that has to be cleared and livestock to feed.
Why do you think the auto makers went to 12 volt? They had 6 volt wipers, radios and so on. They did it because when you want to run a lot of amps draw the 6 volt genny just couldn't keep up. As they went to higher compression engines 12 really became a must have.
