Saw my dad and uncle break it that exact way in about 1966.
It is a bugger getting that bull gear back on by just reaching through the PTO opening. I did it several time when I was in my 20's and strong as could be. No longer.
I would have to take the top off it it were me doing it.

I'm 27 and had a heck of a time doing all the crap with the lid off! One of mine had just a hair of a bugger on the end that kept kicking my butt.
You aren't doing a "full restoration" if you don't replace all those seals in the rear end anyhow. I haven't seen a Farmall that had EVERY one of them functioning properly. I found a couple "extra" problems that I didn't know I had when I broke my bull pinion carrier. :oops: I tried replacing mine w/o taking the bull pinion carrier out and I couldn't get that double seal out. Take note, the new seal is super tiny compared to the old one so I put one the right way on the inside and one the opposite way on the outside to help keep dirt out of the inner seal.
