The 400 or 450 will be cheaper and far more modern than the SMTA. But less classic. The easiest TA test is to get it on a country road (or smooth field road) put it in fifth gear TA back, 3/4 to full throttle, and let out the clutch rapidly but smooth (assumes the way is clear) if it takes off nicely and pulls the engine down then picks up speed the one way clutch (sprague clutch) is good. Shift it to Direct rapidly (always shift the lever fully and rapidly either direction, no halfway movement ever.) If the engine slows rapidly then picks up and the speed increases well the TA is Good to Go. They are really good to have operational. Would it hurt it to operate with a bad TA. Only if it had a bad direct clutch and slipped in direct. A slipping Sprague will not cause problems when used in direct only. JimN
