Yes it could be a major problem... either the shift fork is bent, or in the case of fifth gear, the little nubbins they call teeth which comprise fifth gear are worn sufficiently away. (usually from trying to speedshift into fifth gear, and grinding the teeth away). I believe either way, the cover has to come off and trans input shaft must be removed,and-or replaced.
