The issue is a failed ground. To solve it the following may provide insight. The battery ground strap comming from the negative terminal should be attached to the clutch housing (torque tube). There are several threaded locations suitable for this attachment. The cable end terminal should have a 3/8" hole in it. Use a tap and clean the threads in the hole in the housing. Use 100 grit paper and clean the surface of the housing where the ground strap will attach till it is bright cast iron. Use a new bolt (short enough to not bottom in the casting) with a new flat washer under the head to bolt the cable to the casting. The starting energy now has only a short path to get to the starter motor. (I'll bet it is now grounded to the steering wheel brackets, and they are not adequately grounded, because of paint or rust or unknown gaskets). Poor ground will also cause charging problems. Though this may eliminate the sparking, other issues may be causing the charging problem. One step at a time. Keep us informed on the forum so we can gain from the solution. JimN
