McCormick-Deering Diesel History Lesson Questions

I have a 1950 WD-9. I know that tractor moved into the Super series and then the 600 and 650 all with essentially the same engine. But can someone take me back in history? What was the engine of a WD-40? Some have commented here and even a picture that the W-40 and WK-40 were six cylinder engines. Was the diesel also six cylinder? Thanks much.
