1st timer for 140 pressure plate removal

I'm currently replacing a cracked block with another running engine that has a clutch already on it. Wanted to examine the plate, bearing, and flywheel, but when I tried to remove pressure plate screws, I noticed springs behind plate were under tension. Is this normal? Will I be able to restart those short screws without somehow taking pressure off fingers? Never been in a clutch before...DUH.
