Timing a '53 Super A?

I have a few questions about adjusting the timing on my distributer ignition Super A. First, how do I make the adjustment? To me it looks as though I should loosen the clamp at the top (where the entire distributer assembly attaches to the block?) and then push or pull until it sounds better. This should be done with the engine running? At what throttle setting? What else do I need to know to adjust the timing? Thanks, SAm in NS
