Removing tranny cover from H

I am tryiny to remove tranny cover from 39 H,After fighting with some broken bolts managed to get them all out.Cover will come up about 1/4 inch and thats that.Does the shifter have to be removed and if so how is that done?What can I expect when I pull the cover off?Shifting rods ect!!!!You guys have been very helpful,nothing like experiance.Thanks in advance.Obie from Nh
