Greetings: I have a 1940 Farmall A that I enjoy. I will be buying a more versatile tractor (e.g. 350U) in the future, but I figure I need to build a storage building before I add to my tractor collection. So in the mean time I am having fun extending the functionality of my A. As you can probably tell, my tractors do not pay for themselves by making me money (i.e. they are a fun hobby). Manual lifts build muscles, but they can only lift so much - about 250 lb max with springs. I am thinking of adding power assist devices. Hydraulics are of course the standard and I could probably use a power steering unit for the little I need to lift as I think Chris Auer did to his Farmall A. I am questioning a different approach. I have read that electric gearmotors are beginning to replace hydraulic units in a number of new applications. Would something like this be possible for an A? The attraction of an electric-based power assist are many. First off, adding a generator is easy. Then I also get lights. Wiring is easier than a hydraulic reservoir and the plumbing. What power unit might I use for this application? I have seen linear actuators that can lift 1,500 lbs using a 1/4 hp motor that can be run off the power available in a battery. I know most linear actuators run slower than a hydraulic unit, but speed is not that important for me. So my real questions are, is this idea of mine possible? If so, can anyone provide a lead for a specific power unit? Thanks in advance. Douglas Stockman dstockman@pol.net
