How do I tell what it is?

I am a Ford person, but love all older tractors. A recent acquaintance of mine says her father has an old Farmall sitting out in a field he *might* just give me to get it out of the way. (fingers crossed at this point). Anyway, I am pretty Farmall Ignorant. I can recognize a cub, but after that I am lost. This one is larger than a cub, and from the description, larger than an A. It has a narrow front. A couple of questions: 1. Assuming the sticker or paint with the letter on the front is gone, how do I tell what it is? (i.e. an H, a C, an M, etc.) 2. Where is the serial #, and where can I look it up at on the web? 3. What options should I look for? If it were a red-belly Ford, I'd look for 5 spd. 2 stage clutch, remote hyd. valve, p.s., etc. 4. Is there a website where there are pics of these letter series side by side? I can't tell a C from an H. All guidance is appreciated. Tommy D.
