distillate vs kerosene

There's a discussion below about tractors being set up for burning distillate and it got me wondering - is there a difference between distillate and kerosene. Seems like the two get discussed as being the same but are they the same or are they two diffent things. What is the result of burning one or the other. I know in the old days they were cheaper than gas but I have here they reduce the horsepower some - did they give better fuel economy or were they just less money per gallon.
