Postive or Neg ground on Farmall 400 and AC D19

Hi All, I replaced batt on both of the above tractors and as there was not a batt in either one I put them in hooked up as neg ground. But now both charge backwards or else both gen failed at once. Did I goof and they should have been postive ground?? Thanks Bill
