Seat question

Hi folks;
I just aquired my grandfathers 49 MDw4. I was too young when the tractor was new to recall whether the seat was covered with some sort of fabric or not. It seems to be made with 2 thicknesses of steel with the bottom sheet folding over the upper around the edges and there may be some residue of material squeezed between these 2 parts but I am not sure and have been unable to find any info on the web.
I am hoping some of you may be able to tell me or direct me where I can find this info.
I want to restore the tractor and have everything else lined up but I don't know how to treat the seat.
Thanks for any help you can provide. I'll post pic's when it's done (before and after).

What is an MDw4? Ask on the corresponding tractor forum. A Farmall MD and a McCormick W4 seat consisted of some sort of padding covered with canvas. Those can be recovered, or new aftermarket ones purchased. The construction is as you described. The aftermarket ones are as good as the original ones, and likely cheaper than recovering. Also, unless you are a purist vinyl covering will last a LOT longer, and is easier to clean. The correct color for the IH covering is silver, not red and silver, either is readily available.

Thanks for the information. When I wrote MDw4 I was referring to a McCormik Deering W4. I would be interested in an aftermarket seat as the origial has some cracks at the rear of the base where it is rivited to the attachment support as well as some extensive rust in the folded area which will become a peroblem when trying to work the metal to install a new covering. I have not seen any of these seats offered anywhere but I'm still new at this. Can you direct me to a supplier? your help is much appreciated.

Many suppliers. One is Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch, 785-548-7437. Web site is www.steelwheelranch.com, but you can't order from it. If he doesn't have one in stock he will drop ship you one in less than a week. Didn't occur to me you meant McCormick Deering. In mid-1949, the Deering was dropped, meaning only McCormick was used, yours was apparantly built in early 49.

Thanks so much for the info. I'll do the research on the serial number to see if I can find out when it might have been made. I didn't know about the Deering part of the name beeing dropped in 49. The tractor has an aluminum emblem on the front of the cowl,deeply embossed,black background with the letters wiped off to show the name and the frame. below the name there are several horizontal bars radiating from the center. This emblem is in fair shape and I have sspent some time pressing out some minor dents and deformations. It will look good.
This tractor sat outside at my uncles for about 25 years and the belt pulley which appears to have been made from some sort of compressed tentest has degraded to the point that it would be impossible to rotate it without it flying all apart. Therefore I am also looking for a good used or new pulley. Any help woul be good.
I'll get in touch with mike about a seat. Thanks again.

You can get almost any question answered on the Farmall forum, this site. Here are a few online IH parts sites:

www.steelwheelranch.com

www.oemtractorparts.com
www.weberstractorworks.com -- has NOS (new old stock parts)

This site also sells many of the above parts.
