The Chalmers and the cowboy boots | One chilly fall day many years ago, I drove over to my friend Todd's house just to see what he was up to. As I pulled into the driveway I noticed the garage doors were open and saw an empty spot were the old WC usually sat. Must be out in the woods somewhere, I mused as I walked back the long lane that led to the back of a heavily wooded area that we had hunted in for many years, finally to hear the raspy scream of his chainsaw gnawing through wood. He stopped sawing long enough to say that he wasn't up to much and that he was cutting up firewood to put up for the winter, and what was I up to. Absolutely nothing, I said, eyeing up the chalmers tractor sitting there with the trailer hooked to it piled with firewood. 'Need any help?' I ask, hoping to get some riding time on the WC. 'Sure,' he says, noticing my hopeful stare. 'Get on'. Excitedly I scramble onto the footboard, almost slipping back off. I was wearing an old pair of cowboy boots at the time, and they had NO grip to them at all. 'Take her out to the road to get back to the house so we don't get stuck over in the wet part,' Todd hollers, as I pull her into low gear and ease out the clutch, lumbering through the wet field onto the gravel road to go unload the heavily loaded trailer. As we turned the corner into the driveway I thought he said 'pull in out back!' but it was really 'pull it AROUND the back (of the shed)!!! I panic and try to stomp on the brake pedals, but my slippery boot only catches ONE and the old Chalmers is now skidding SIDEWAYS (we're on the backside of a wet hill!) and finally come to a stop halfways down! I slowly looked back at the jacknifed trailer, expecting to get clobberd by Todd, but I only hear gales of laughter! He said that there was no damage to anything except the thirty foot skid in the yard from the tractor's right tire, and boy, the terrified look on my face going by was priceless!! So after we (HE) straightened out the trailer and both of us finished stacking wood, we both had a good laugh about it, and then he proceeds to nickname me Skids, for what I did to his yard, and now every time I see him he always has to remind me of it! Chores - by Frank Young. The ceaseless passing of time! It is at once our friend and our enemy. It measures our progress and it makes us old. Like most features of our life, few things are all good or all bad, and most such judgments depend on our own perspective or viewpoint. In our particular hobby, we enjoy the nostalgic return to the days of our youth as we recreate many of the scenes that took place on the family farm that served as the stage for the first few acts of the play that is our live
