Plowing with Mules | Thought I'd share something I saw some 35 years ago. I was a telephone man in west Tex at the time and had a service call some 20 miles southeast of Paducah Tx. As I was driving to the farmhouse, I couldn't help but notice how straight the rows were in this 40 or 50 acre cotton crop. Had to be in July or Aug for the cotton was knee-high. When I got to the house, an old 80 something year old black man walked up to tell me what was going on with his phone. During the conversation, I told him how good his crop looked, and wondered where his equipment was, because I hadn't seen a tractor around. He told me he farmed with Mules, and had so for over 50 years. Couldn't believe his pride in telling me this. He told me also that 'every year I make money, those folks with tractors can't say that! I ain't got no payments, ain't had none for 50 years, and I sure want to keep it that way' He told me how many teams he had gone through, but I have since forgotton. I still wonder, how much longer the old man farmed after I moved out west. He was in great physical condition, and probably had numerous great grandkids while still working those mules! This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit
