i've done it a few years now. works well in the veg rotation- plant about now, when the veggies are done, makes lots of organic matter in the spring, then get it off and till before planting late spring veg next year. Here (SE NY) figure on mowing the last week in May, let it dry for a week or 2 depending on weather. we use it all on the farm for mulching the vegetables. if a good stand of rye, there's no weeds or any seeds.
