: I am in the market for a new tractor, mostle for work around the yard. I need something that gives a smooth ride due to back problems. It seems the bigger tired machines ride better and am looking at garden tractors as opposed to lawn. Can someone give me some good advise? There are so many its hard to decide. Why are JD's so much more than murray or MTD? are sears any better than MTD or Murray? SHould I go Hydrostatic? HELP!!!!!!

Jim,
For what it's worth, I just bought a 300 series Wheel Horse. The idea was to get a quality tractor that would out last two or three cheaper ones over the next twenty plus years and still not spend a bundle. Though mine is gear drive and a bit antiquated when compared to the newer Wheel Horse 5xi models, the quality is incredible. It rides very well and has a very controled feel. The 300 series might be your compromise between the more expensive JD's and the less expensive Sears/MTD etc. I have about $3500 in mine with a 42" rear discharge deck (which allows me to trim on both sides). Good luck!
