: GUYS, IM BANGING MY HEAD....
: MY 1950-52 8N WON'T START, THE STARTER TURNS, I HAVE DECENT SPARK
: ON OUT FO MY COIL AND AT ALL FOUR PLUGS. PLUGS DO GET WET. NEW POINTS, SET AT .015, NEW PLUG WIRES.
: THE ONLY TIME I EVEN GET A SPUTTER IS WHEN I JUMPER AROUND THE IGINITION
: RESISTOR, SO I REPLACED IT....DIDN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
: I HAVE 6 VOLTS INTO THE RESISTOR, ABOUT 4.5 OUT TO THE COIL.
: I HAVE ALSO SWAPPED OUT THE COIL...THINKING MAYBE THE SPARK WASN'T
: STRONG ENOUGH. I STARTED LOOKING AT THE STATER ITSELF, AND POSSIBLY THE SOLENOID (STATER RESISTOR).
: THE ONLY THING THAT I SAW THAT WAS EVIDENT, WAS THAT OCCASIONALY THE STARTER SEEMS TO
: DISENGAGE....OR CHATTER. I HAVE TO STOP WITH THE STARTER BUTTON AND THEN RESUME AGAIN.
: THE TRANNY IS IN NEUTRAL (MECHANICAL CUTOUT).

: ANY SUGGESTIONS, AS TO WHY THIS WON'T START OR WHAT TO LOOK AT???

: WHAT COMPOUNDS THE TROUBLESHOOTING IS THE 6VOLT BATTERY DOSN'T LAST LONG
: AND THE CARBS FLOODS, BUT I HEAR THIS IS TYPICAL.

: THANKS AGAIN,

: BOB

1) First make sure the gas is fresh - this is sometimes overlooked.
2) Make sure you are getting it to the cylinders - try a good choke by covering the
carb intake.
2) It sounds like you were working on the ignition. Make sure you get
spark. Sometimes the plugs spark outside, but under compression they
don't. Maybe try new plugs to be sure.
3) Make sure the timing is correct - static time it to TDC (or whatever the
timing should be) for the compression stroke of the number 1
cylinder. Pull the spark plug and make sure that the points are just
breaking contact at TDC (or whatever ..) of the number 1 cylinder. You can
use a voltmeter and hook it up to the points - it should read 0 V when points
are closed and about 6 V when they break open.
4) Make sure you didn't rotate the distributor cap
when you put it on

If you get fresh gas and get a timed spark it has to fire off.
Good Luck - Let us know what the problem was. I know you'll figure it
out.
