If yoe a small bolt head am at a loss as to what caps you are refering to on the tappets since the tappet (if non adjustable) or screw head (on adjustable tappets) operates directly on the valve

: : : The sleeves were professionally alled by a reputable machine shop. He didn't have the head planed. I goofed when I said the caps were on the tappets. They an the stems of the exhaust valves. The caps are the free exhaust valve rotators. They are plainly shown in the I&T service ml. : : If your father-in-law replaced the sleeves in the engine, try to find out how easily they installed. We have set more than once that a person rebuilding one of these engines just slipped the sleeve into the bore with litlle resistance.e consequence is tha break up and end up in the oil pan. : : If he had the head planed it then becomes necessary to install head gaskets to keept manifold and look at the lifters. If you see a small bolt head proturding from them, then they are adable. You need a spelps you find your problem, but do not allow the knock to continue or it certainly will cost you more mothan fixing the problem now. : : : My father-in-law has an 8N that he rebuilt the engine on. It runs great but it has a verud ticking noise. Itinstall new valve guides. Could a valve guide be jumping up and down or is the tappet clearance just reamessed up. He doesn't seem to care about the noise but it really bothers me to hear a brand new engine run like that. Thanks any help. Mike
