: I assume there are plenty of people out
: there who've rebuilt model B's. My question:
: are there any shorcuts on an engine rebuild?
: Or should I plan on replacing the cam bearings
: as well as the pistons, rings, liners, gaskets
: and valve guides? Do I have to replace the
: valves or can they be ground and reused?
: What about valve seats?

Short cuts are rarely worth it, and there aren't many that make sense. Unless the motor has very low hours and is apart for some unusual reason, replace all the bearings. Worn ones reduce oil pressure and shorten the motor life. Also, rings are also replaced nearly 100% of the time, especially cause there soo cheap. Pistons are replaced when worn or cracked. If they clean-up well and look OK, they usually are fine. Sleeves are gonners when they can't be honed back to some reasonable state. Valve guides are made of a soft material so as to wear before the valve (which is generally reusable). Seats are replaced when pitted or mashed. Clean everything. Inspect carefully. Replace worn parts. Use all new gaskets. Have a shop measure all bearing surfaces and inspect piston/cylinder wall clearance. get a good manual!
