The S-O-S was a viable transmission, not junk. It was easily turned to junk if absolute cleanliness was not maintained. Be rigorous about cleaning filter screens and changing transmission oil. Learn proper procedure for adjusting bands. If it ever needs work, find the best old timer Ford trained mechanic. Parts are expensive; some aren't available.

PTO hp is about 40.

If the tractor is working for you, don't trade it...you won't get anything for it with the S-O-S. The trans could go a long time yet. Then swap out for a 5 speed (about $1500).

Central Tractor (800-247-0126) can get the overhaul parts you need. They aren't in the catalog, but ask for Gene (X2403) and he can locate them at the right price.

: I have a Ford 4000, gas 3-cyl, select-o-matic trans., and Ford front end loader on it. A friend of mine told me that the select-o-matic transmissions are junk & that you can't get parts for them. Says he went to a tractor junkyard where they had a huge stack of them because people swap them out for stick shift transmissions. What's the word on this? Could someone also tell me what the b.h.p. on the gas three cyinder is? I'll have to either rebuild the present engine or replace it so does anyone know where I can find rebuild kits, rebuilt engines or used engines at?? Thanks.
