I suggest a high compression ratio engine for easy-starting in winter or spring. A tractor like the John-Deere 2555 typically has a 17.8:1. A 4WD with cab and front loader costs 35-40000$. A Ford 5610 which has 16.3:1 ratio costs 30 to 35000$ but is more tough to start without aid at -20 degrees.Landini or Landini-Massey-Ferguson 294 costs around 20000$. The 248 CID Perkins engines has 16:1 ratio and can be started without aid down to -10 °C. The front wheel-drive of Landini which is a Carrero is more difficult to adjust than ZF as on Ford, true Massey and perhaps earlier Deere. Deere probably have their own design today. Pay attention to the low capacity of hydraulic pumps of many Massey tractors. The PTO clutch is engaged with a manual clutch lever just under the throttle on many Landini and Landini build Massey like the 254, 274 and 294. Avoid low compression engine like those of Interenational or Case IH of the 74, 84, 85 or 95 series(574,674,585,685,784,...). Ford and IH have engine with 16:1 compression ratio, but Ford has compression of 450 to 510 psi and Case IH has 345-375. Avoid direct injection IH engine if you require unaided easy starting during winter.
Avoid tractors having more than 5000 hours of operation. Best deals are 3000 hours and around 15 years old.
Ford and Cummins(late Case-IH in Maxxum/Magnum and Agco-white) do not have sleeves in their engines.
My personnal preference is John Deere, Ford, Massey and Case-IH in order.
Now, I own 4 Massey, 2 Ford, 1 Deere. Previously, I owned two IH 574.
