Re: not melting dirty lead in production pot. It can't possibly hurt to melt dirty lead elswhere and pour ingots. Ingots will be quicker to melt when you want to start casting bullets. Be sure ingot will fit in production pot. You will still need to skim some crud off the top after melting.
Another thing about batteries: Getting rid of the acid is a problem. The one time I processed one it came from a burned tractor so that wasn't a problem. The plates inside the battery are coated with corrosion, are thin to begin, and don't yield much lead. Don't see any reason not to knock the posts off before selling the battery and use them occasionally.
Plumbers used lead to seal the joints in cast iron pipes so If you find someone replacing pipes that is a possibility.
Mixing tin in the lead for hardness is something you will have to research. The Lyman book discuss it.
