I have a 5240 (1997) and have also had hydraulic issues over the last couple of years... my tractor suddenly developed poor hydraulic performance and then the powershift/shuttle started to get really jerky...
One of my best friends used to work for an IH dealership and managed to get the workshop test books and test kit for this series of tractors and we still had a heck of a time to figure out what was wrong... it took both of us nearly 8 weeks to figure it out... (thankfully not all day everyday but still)
turned out to be something relatively simple, just very hard to find..
