Smooth side of the belt goes against the drum, and against the idler pulley or tightener. Ribbed side goes against the motor "pulley". Watch you don't route the belt over any sharp edges.
My new belt came with a diagram inside the package - did you look to see if there were directions in the package?
I also drew the diagram on the inside of the dryer cabinet with a Sharpie pen. For next time.
