Thanks greygoat, what you said is what I thought also. Another engine guy said to buy after market pistons and just replace the two bad ones. My two bad pistons show wear above the top ring lance on the side of the piston that faces the valley. I was told that might have been caused from running too lean. This engine was used on a machine than would crank up and move into position and then shut the engine off. It might have taken ten to twenty minutes to position the machine. So this machine never ran very long at any one time. I call it a machine but it was actually a ramp to unload cars from rail cars. When the valves were removed from the block the intake ports were almost plugged with carbon right below the valve head. I wonder if that was caused from short run times?
