Okay, after re-reading your original post I see what you mean. Yes, you can bend springs in the sizes you are after. I have had quite a bit of success bending coil springs for modeling purposes from music wire, up to about 5/32 can be bent by hand (wear heavy gloves, if the wire breaks it is nasty sharp) and probably up to 5/16 with some tooling. It will be a trial and error process, the tricky parts are making the mandrel the correct size to account for springback and spacing the coils properly. Music wire up to about 1/4 inch should be available at any well-stocked hobby shop that caters to R/C airplane hobbyists. I wouldn't apply heat, though, as you would probably ruin all your hard work by drawing the temper.
