Shopped for a backhoe last year- always heard bad things about the 550 Ford because of torque converter problems. Bought a 1970 all-gear drive and it's been good. Other recommendation was to get a real recent one- out of my $ limit or need. I would suspect a bad torque converter with the sluggish starts, bad seals and gaskets with the other problems.
