The number of coats depends on how good or bad your sheet metal is. I use 3 or 4, perhaps 2 occasionally, you just want it smooth, so that it fills the depressions. You don't want a lot of build up, because with the 170+182+topcoat you can get it too thick. All coats, primer+surfacer+topcoat are considered when determining thickness of paint. You do not need the additional 170 as a sealer. The initial 170 seals the surface from rust and provides adhesion for the 182. The topcoat seals the 182. Also the 170 does not usually flow out well enough to use as a final surface under topcoat on sheet metal, it will be smoother without the 182. Rod will correct me if I'm wrong!
