I just looked at their website. You don't say what the type of paint you're using.
I'm assuming you are using their Tractor Alkyd Enamel and the clear he sold you is a Lacquer base. That is why he said wait a week. If the lacquer penetrate into the enamel, it will wrinkle. This combo never worked for me...but...Don't get the clear overly wet. Just enough to get gloss. If you have to put on a second coat, I'd wait until the first coat is completely dry to the touch.
On second thought, I wouldn't clear coat unless you use enamel clear or urethane. The lacquer clear will yellow faster than if you just leave it white...but...If you rattle canned the white, you need two more coats. While aerosols are quick and easy, you don't get enough paint build up or mil thickness as a spray gun.
