Lance........surprizingly enuff, yer starter motor don't care positive (+) ground ...or... negative (-) ground. It always turns the correct direction. And yer original 6-volt starter works just fine on 12-volts. The ONLY thing that matters is NEGATIVE (-) ground for yer 12-volt ALTERNATOR. Them little solid state devices don't work with incorrect grounding.
Yer description of trying to connect yer battery to BOTH posts of yer 3-terminal starter motor solenoid is the WRONG way to connect yer 12-volt battery.
Connect the battery POSITIVE (+) cable to the NON-STARTER post of yer solenoid. The short COPPER buss-barr goes to yer insulated starter motor stud. The little middle terminal snakes back to yer BIG THUMB starter push button by yer tranny shifter.
Connect yer battery NEGATIVE (-) to the built-in connection of the battery sheetmetal tray. .........Dell, a 12-volt advocate that knows 8-ways to convert to 12-volts and they all work the 1st-time
