It is most likely the back of the lug studs hitting, since they are rear most parts, so I'm not sure what material you would remove? If hub &/or axle are worn that much, then you run into situation where nut/washer tightens against axle shoulder & hub remains loose on splines. New hub & perhaps new axle to fix.
