It all depends on what you're looking for. Troy bilt is part of MTD which also builds Cub Cadet, white, and most of your other home depot/lowes/tsc mowers. You are definitely going to get what you pay for.
Case in point, my dad and I bought a couple of MTD Zero turns this fall. Mine is the residential unit (rzt 42) and his is the semi-commercial unit (Z-Force 50). The build quality between the two is like night and day. The residential is all stamped and quite cheaply constructed. The semi-commercial has a tube frame, much better hydro's and some other nice features (like a belt tensioner that you can access).
Of course the MSRP for mine was $2300 while his was $4500. He needed a better machine because it will be his only mower. I didn't because I'm just going to use it to cut where I can't with the 6ft finish mower.
Just remember you get what you pay for. You can't just ask "are troybilts / cub cadets / etc a good brand to buy. Everyone's selling cheap versions right now.
