If it has been converted to 12 Volts, and still has the original 6- Volt coil, you need TWO resistors in the circuit, the original ballast resistor AND a 6-to-12 Volt converting resistor. Is it possible when you rewired it, you did not get one of the resistors back in the circuit? If so, this MAY have "cooked" the coil and/or burned the points. The 5Th diagram down from the top on the site linked below would be very similar to what you have. It shows the original resistor on the terminal block AND the additional resistor, Just ignore the wire and "marker lamp" connected to the alternator's #1 terminal, since you have a "one-wire" alternator, this is NOT needed. (Ceramic resistors smoke when they heat up, when new, or if there is any oily residue on them. Do not condemn a resistor just because it smokes.)
