A lot of counties in VA are now using GPS satellites sending image data to GIS (Graphical Information System) software to produce VERY accurate 3D maps for local planning offices. In the not too distant future, counties will be able to periodically get detailed photographs of your property and have computer software automatically compare them to a picture taken in the past to see if there are any differences in the photo and then automatically see if the owner applied for any buiding permits for the change, e.g. computer says, "Hmmmmmm, that deck wasn't there on the last scan. Did this joker get a permit to build it? Ah ha! He didn't. Well, I'll just send a little email to the Planning Office so they can go pay him a visit."
