Speaking from my experience as a civil engineer, cost should not be an issue. Generally when two or more surveyors work in the same area, prices remain competative. I just got a quote on surveying a 3.5 acre parcel yesterday. Here in McHenry County, Illinois, to create a legal description and plat of survey of an existing parcel, $200.00. My recomendation to you, however, is to go a step further. While the surveyor is at the site, have him complete the topographic survey of the property as well and make sure it is referenced to a USGS benchmark. Topograpy, in case you did not know, depicts the grade elevations of the property using isobars. This will come in handy if you should ever decide to develop the property. The same property mentioned above with topographic survey was $1200.00 Also, I don't know any surveyors who aren't producing surveys on computer these days. Ask to have a copy of the drawing file on a floppy disk. Then, whoever needs to use it next, architect, engineer, landscaper, etc., will be able to base his/her drawings on that original drawing file. It takes away a good deal of drafting time for us.
