I tried that last winter on a BF. If you have one frame rail off you can do it the way you describe-hooking the clutch shaft to the drive shaft and start the clutch together as you drop the engine in. Otherwise, you will have to cut the notch where the bell housing slides in the frame about 3" to 4" longer to the front. At least that is what I had to do to this BF. you need the radiator off and the front motor mount loose so it ca pivot toward the front too. at least that is what it took for this BF.
