Ether has been around since before diesels, and the two are growing appart because of scare tactics far as I am concerned. No you do not use ether and....OK 'starting fluid' and glow plugs at the same time, no you do not wash down the inside of the engine with enough to spraypaint a door, but...like Carling Black Labels... just fine if used in moderation.... To have the perfect combination of 400 pounds compression, fine fuel oils injected perfectly, I fine incredable after an engine is a few years old, so an old timer, no glow plugs, in winter.... it's 'starting fluid' or a gasoline model...or a horse. My old IH 656 had a bracket under the dash for TWO spray cans- and it had glow plugs and a plug in heater... I presume the farmall guys knew these needed such a rig... BTW, I spent nearly $400 on new glow plugs for my once junked Standard 23C.... to no avail. It didn't start any easier with preheat plugs...but will start everytime with a shot of ether...
