Little Red The multi-powers on these 90s are the greatest thing, when they are working. Biggest problem with these units is the parts are getting hard to find. Clutches will have to be found at wreckers. The reason these clutches give problems is....the Power steering pumps get weak and dont supply enough pressure to keep the clutches from slipping. Same thing goes with the PTO clutches. The whole tractor is run with the little PS pump located just in front of the brake pedals, inside of the clutch housing. If this is OK you should have a good tractor. Easiest way to tell if the PS pump is OK....Start the tractor, at an idle, turn the steering wheel. Should turn with your finger, all the way, each way. If you have to Rev the engine up to turn, the PS pump is weak. Also when you turn the wheel all the way to one side, and hold it the releif valve should squeal. Another indication of a good PS pump. PS pumps are still available, but pricey..Over 1000.00. However once you have a new one they usually dont give trouble if you take care of them. Biggest problem is the gearshift boots get cracks in them and let rain water into the transmission, then it goes through the PS pump. Check the boots. Put new ones on. Another weakness with the 90 is the brakes. They tend to stick and wear out. Again a lot is maintenance. There are grease nipples under the tractor which grease the brake pivots. Grease often. Check the front wheels for sideways play...The bearings may need to be tightened, or replaced. Diesel Head gaskets tend to blow out between NO 3 and 4 piston. Fairly easy fix if you Know how? And the head bolts have to be re-tightened after running a bit. All in all I wouldnt be afraid of any 90. Best tractor of this size made. Bar none. The perkins diesel will take a lot of abuse and keep right on going. Easy start, and economical. I am running 7 Massey 90s on my farm. 6 diesels. One with MP and one gas with MP. Always looking for more MP 90s. I buy and fix up 90s as a bit of a hobby. Have a large selection of new and used parts, if you need something. Up here (Canada) where I am at we have about 25+ 90s within 30 miles of me that I know of. Many of these people will not part with their 90s.
