I was told me not to use ATF in my 1973 MF20 industrial power steering as it would damage the seal on the engine end of the pump. Use the regular hydraulic fluid instead, which I did for many years with no problem. Now I have a 1965 MF180 and the book recommends ATF. Can I safely use the Hydraulic fluid or will it damage the system? I took the pump cover off and replaced the filter but it was hard to tell what was in it for oil (really old looking).
